Celebrating Africa, culture, community and family

KITCHENER, ON, (FEBRUARY 16, 2020) The rhythm and spirit of Africa will warm up Kitchener Waterloo with music, food and love this Family Day at the Rotunda, Kitchener City Hall.

Bring on the Sunshine African Festival is moving into its 8th year and on Sunday only for the first time this year! A festival that brings vibrant energy, family-fun and a fantastic community event, it’s not to be missed. Festival Director, Alice Penny is one of the amazing women leading this festival now celebrating its 10th year. “We pride ourselves on offering a uniquely interactive and creative experience based in the heart of the local African community - and we are surprised and amazed by the support of the community that has got us to this 10-year milestone!” 

The fashion show is always one of the highlights – attendees can volunteer to be arrayed in the finest of African Fashion and participate in the fashion show. Spashasha Gumboot dancers are back with their high energy dance and interactive performances. The Afro-tribal dancers will wow you with high energy West African dancing and a special appearance from the local Inshallah Choir will thrill you too!

African dancing, face painting and henna, a vibrant market place and great local ethnic foods, kids will love learning traditional games like tsoro, taking part in the drum circle, and can get creative with arts and crafts, face painting and lots of workshops and activities.

Vanessa Djumo, is the Festival Coordinator and is leading the dynamic youth team who runs the event. She says: “This festival happens at a time of year when people need warmth. It’s the perfect time for us come together as a community and celebrate the contributions and culture of all Black Canadians in our region. We bring the sunshine every year with our rhythmic beats, savory food, interactive workshops and warm African hearts!  We are glad that for one day we get to brighten up Kitchener City Hall by showcasing our African roots in the city. We hope to see you at the festival! Come Bring on the Sunshine with us!”

It will be on Sunday Feb. 16th, 2020 at Kitchener City Hall, 200 King st West, Kitchener. Doors open at 10:30 AM.  The stage will run from 11PM - 5PM.
